Showcasing Aboriginal Culture to the World
Vancouver Community College, the oldest and largest community college in BC, is an innovator in developing programming for typically under represented groups including aboriginals and immigrants. Notably, VCC has recently launched Canada’s first aboriginal culinary arts program.
Curtis Blaney, 33, of the Homalco band in Campbell River is excited about his career prospects after graduation. "I already have a job lined up on the Sunshine Coast and look forward to using the skills I have learned," says Blaney. "I now feel confident that I could suggest a traditional dish and really impress people with it."
VCC's 12-month aboriginal culinary arts program is part of a partnership with the Four Host First Nations to showcase aboriginal culture to the world during the 2010 Olympics. "This is an exciting opportunity for VCC to showcase aboriginal cuisine and take a leadership role in bringing this talent to the forefront of the culinary stage," says dean of hospitality, Jonathan Rouse.
