The Jobs Situation in BC
Between now and 2020, there are expected to be one million job openings in BC (see chart at right).
Two factors drive openings: replacement jobs (created by retiring workers and deaths) and new jobs (created by growth in the economy).
78 per cent of job openings are expected to require some form of post-secondary education, versus the current 68 per cent.
This shift, coupled with the impact of retiring baby boomers and the growth of the economy, will put increased strain on the post-secondary system to educate people with the necessary skills to fill these jobs.
