• Between now and 2020, there are expected to be one million job openings in BC (see chart at right).
• Two factors drive openings: replacement jobs (created by retiring workers and deaths) and new jobs (created by growth in the economy).
• 78 per cent of job openings are expected to require some form of post-secondary education, versus the current 68 per cent.
• This shift, coupled with the impact of retiring baby boomers and the growth of the economy, will put increased strain on the post-secondary system to educate people with the necessary skills to fill these jobs.
