Camosun College student brings home gold
Camosun College Plumbing & Pipe Trades student Kyle Horne won gold in the Steamfitter-Pipefitter category at the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition held in Winnipeg, Manitoba over the weekend.
The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Approximately 550 competitors from all regions of Canada participated in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.
It was Kyle’s passion and resolve as he methodically completed the steam project that helped him win gold.
“Kyle worked very diligently throughout the entire competition,” Jamie McPherson, Plumbing, Pipe & Refrigeration Trades Instructor. “He had a bit of a target on his back as he was facing competitors from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba which he had beaten at the UA Western Canadian Pipe Trades Apprentice Competition for Steamfitting at Camosun in April.
Kyle is a third year Steamfitting apprentice with UA Local 324 currently working for Keith Plumbing and Heating.
The SCNC provides an opportunity to showcase trade and technology careers and skills. It brings together industry, government and education representatives who get a chance to see the students in action.
