Camosun Mechanical Engineering Technology Instructor Receives Prestigious Scholarship
Kathy Tarnai-Lokhorst, Camosun College Mechanical Engineering Technology instructor, is committed to increasing the number of women in engineering. To help with her research, she is one of three recipients, chosen from applicants across Canada, to receive the Engineers Canada-TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship award. The scholarship, valued at $7,500, supports Canadian professional engineers returning to university for further study or research in a field other than engineering that complements engineering practice.
“My long term goal is to increase the number of women in engineering so that the engineering profession and our global society can benefit from greater creativity and safety in engineering designs,” says Kathy.
Kathy’s research is looking for ways to encourage a higher rate of young women to transition from high school physics to post-secondary engineering programs. Although her long-term goal is to increase the number of women in engineering, she believes her research will also help students of both genders have a better understanding about engineering when they make their career decisions.
