CNC signs historic MOU with Cheslatta
The College of New Caledonia (CNC) signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cheslatta Carrier Nation during the grand opening of the community’s new Education Centre on March 28.
The MOU sets a strong foundation for a future working relationship based on principles of respect, communication, trust and understanding. It will also help inform continued work to provide community-based programs to the community of Cheslatta.
“One of the most important aspects of education is accessibility. When students are able to learn in their own community, the whole region thrives,” said CNC President Henry Reiser. “This new education centre will improve access to post-secondary education and training within the community. “
This agreement ties into CNC’s Strategic Plan for Promoting Student Success. It is part of the school’s mandate to work in collaboration with Aboriginal communities to incorporate Aboriginal cultures throughout CNC campuses and programming.
In 2017, CNC worked with the Cheslatta Carrier Nation to bring 12 Continuing Education courses to the community. These courses included ATV Rider, Canadian Firearm Safety, Enform Level 1 Chainsaw Basics, S100 Fire Suppression, Fall Protection, Introduction to Confined Space, OFA Level 1, Radio Operations, Spill Response, Traffic Control and OFA Transportation Endorsement.
The new Education Centre is also scheduled to bring Academic Upgrading to the Cheslatta Carrier Nation in April. CNC is also in the planning stages of having Digital Delivery Instruction technology installed in the new Education Centre. This technology would allow students to receive engaged and interactive support from the entire CNC community, which will enhance student success.
“We look forward to working with the Cheslatta Nation to achieve the educational goals their members aspire to,” said CNC Director of Aboriginal Education Marlene Erickson.
