Langara College School of Nursing is Awarded Seven Years of CASN Accreditation
Vancouver, BC - The Langara College School of Nursing has been awarded a full seven-year accreditation from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), the maximum period that can be awarded to an institution. The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing is the national accrediting body for nursing education in Canada and Langara is proud to receive the maximum accreditation on its first application.
"The faculty worked hard to achieve this mark of excellence and I am glad that they have been rewarded for their hard work on the curriculum and their work with students," says Janine Lennox, School of Nursing Chair. "CASN reviewers acknowledged the curriculum, practice experiences, and, dedication to the student experience as strengths of the BScN program. In addition, the integration of resources to support our students' success in writing the licensing exam (NCLEX), was praised as a significant support for the students."
The benefits of accreditation go beyond reputation. This significant achievement acknowledges the academic rigour of the Langara Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Graduates from the program find they have a smoother path to graduate education at other institutions.
Nursing programs must be approved by the provincial regulatory body, the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC), but accreditation is voluntary. “We willingly open our doors, program, curriculum, practice agencies, student experience, and faculty to the scrutiny of qualified peers,” says Lennox. “We allow them to examine and question our processes and results and for them to evaluate our institution, program, faculty, and students against national markers for excellence.“
The Bachelor of Science In Nursing program was approved by the CRNBC in October, 2013. The review was so successful that the program was awarded recognition for seven years, until December, 2020 – the longest period offered by the CRNBC, and a distinction reserved for exceptional programs.
Brad O’Hara, Provost & Vice President, Academics & Students, congratulated the School of Nursing on their accomplishment, “This is a wonderful and remarkable achievement as few nursing programs achieve seven-year accreditation status in their inaugural application to CASN. This mark of excellence recognizes that Langara’s School of Nursing and its BScN degree and Nursing Transition programs are truly outstanding. Their vision, many years of planning, and hard work have yielded an enviable result of which we all can be proud.”
Langara's BSN program is accredited with CASN until February, 2022.
