Publishing students celebrate the launch of Pacific Rim Magazine

Guests at PRM Launch, May 4

Vancouver, BC – Langara’s Publishing Program has launched the 2016 issue of the Pacific Rim Magazine. Students, faculty, friends and family gathered at Beaumont Studios last night to celebrate the release of the glossy, 64-page publication.

In its 28th year, the Pacific Rim Magazine is a cornerstone project for Langara’s one-year Publishing Program, showcasing students’ writing, editing, print and web design skills. The final product is a result of collaboration between students in the Publishing, Professional Photography, Marketing Management, and Library & Information Technology programs.

“This year’s issue was created by a tremendously dedicated and talented group of students,” says Celina O’Connor, a publishing student and Managing Editor of Pacific Rim Magazine.

“Writing, editing, designing, and producing a magazine entirely from scratch was one of the most difficult yet rewarding things any of us has ever done. It was a great hands-on and collaborative learning experience, one that stretched our creative abilities and required a dogged stamina in order to succeed. We are so proud of the final result and greatly appreciate the help and support of our instructors who guided us through the process.”

The 2016 issue centers on the topic of solutions, and what people in BC and the Pacific Rim are doing to address social and environmental problems. Editorial highlights include, “Rethink Re-Use”, about how Vancouver residents and business owners are tackling plastic pollution in an effort to reduce their environmental footprint, and “What’s in a name”, which brings attention to the restoration of Indigenous place names as a meaningful first step towards reconciliation.

"This project provides a unique opportunity to apply a wide variety of skills learned in the program,” adds Darren Bernaerdt, Publishing Department Coordinator and publisher of Pacific Rim Magazine. "Every year, the students put their own creative touch on this publication. This year’s issue continues the tradition of a professional calibre magazine."

On May 4, 14,000 copies of the publication were distributed in The Globe and Mail to subscribers across BC. Publishing students are now working on the website for this year's magazine, which will go live August 2016.
