Northern Lights College Student Success: Small Town, Big Opportunity

Sarah Squires is a graduate of the applied business technology program offered at Northern Lights College. With her high-school diploma as her only past education, Sarah decided to enrol in the ABT program being funded by the government in her hometown of Tumbler Ridge.

Sarah knew opportunities like this rarely present themselves in the small mining town, and took advantage of the opportunity to further her education.

As part of the six-month program, Sarah developed office skills in word processing, keyboarding, spreadsheets, accounting, and bookkeeping.

She was able to put these newly developed skills to use with a week-long practicum working with the Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark Visitor Centre.

Sarah is currently back at Northern Lights College - not as a student but as a campus clerk at the Tumbler Ridge campus.

"With all my fingers and toes crossed I applied and landed the position," says Sarah. "It is a year later now and it's all thanks to the wonderful ABT program that I was able to receive the education needed to embark on the career I [had] wished for."
