Northwest Community College Study On The Skeena

Terrace, BC – Northwest Community College students participated in a unique learning experience, rafting on the Skeena River last Saturday. Launching from Guxts'eliksit, a Lax Skiik (Eagle Clan) fishing site and Language and Culture Camp, students traveled along the ancient water highways of the Gitxsan. The float on the Skeena River was especially stunning in the brilliant autumn colours.

This October 3rd trip was part of Sociology and Anthropology classes at NWCC, taught by college professors Chris Gee and Sheree Ronaasen.

"Visiting a vibrant and working fishing camp and then traveling, on the Skeena River, to an ancient village site allows NWCC students the rare opportunity to connect academics to the water level realities of our region's history and culture," says Chris Gee. "Innovative classes like these provide students with unique experiences like directly engaging with the last intact wild salmon ecosystem on the planet."

NWCC likes to take education outdoors at every opportunity. Our region's cultural history and diversity and the benefits of local First Nations knowledge combined with the geography of this northwest B.C. and the wildness of the environment make our outside-the-classroom learning opportunities appealing to University Credit students. Many of our field-based studies are development and delivered in collaboration with First Nation communities and none can be replicated outside the northwest BC. Read more.
