VCC hosts automotive skills competition for high school students
VANCOUVER, B.C. -- On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, Vancouver Community College (VCC) hosted the 2013 Skills BC automotive service techician regional competition. Thirteen high school students competed in the automotive service trade to win a spot in the provincial competition to be held in Abbotsford in April 2013.
Proving his exceptional skill, John Oliver Secondary School student Jack Hanen came out on top and will advance to the provincials. Following close behind were Van Tech student Ato Essandoh and Churchill Secondary student Andy Chen, who finished second and third respectively.
“It’s incredible to see young people show passion and excellence in trades,” says Sandra Bailey, dean of transportation trades at VCC. “These competitions and trades programs for youth are so important to get students ready for the workforce. By the time these students graduate from high school, they're skilled in a trade and ready to work.”
VCC provides Industry Training Authority (ITA) approved programs and partners with high schools from Vancouver and Burnaby and the South Fraser region to provide exciting career exploration and skill training. High school students can enroll in college trade programs through the ACE-IT (Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training) program.
