Selkirk College Fine Woodworking Show Highlights Student Artistry and Skill

Nelson welcomed the highly anticipated Fine Woodworking Show & Sale from May 23 to 25, where students from Selkirk College’s renowned Fine Woodworking Program showcased their craftsmanship and creativity.

The event featured custom-built furniture pieces created by 22 students. Each piece reflected a unique combination of skill, precision, and artistic vision.

“It was a fun experience to see people’s reactions to our work, how different people interacted with the furniture,” said student Isabelle Keeling.

As students completed their final projects, excitement filled the workshop of one of Canada’s most respected fine woodworking programs. Among them were Keeling and her classmate Jake Aharoni, both bringing unique backgrounds and aspirations to their craft.

Aharoni, originally from just north of Toronto, discovered his passion for woodworking in high school before moving to Whistler as a snowboard instructor. He later relocated to Nelson to refine his skills through Selkirk College’s program.

Keeling, a graduate of Stanley Humphries Secondary in Castlegar, developed her technique with the goal of earning a Red Seal certification in the trade.

Selkirk College’s nine-month Fine Woodworking Program prepared students for apprenticeship positions in cabinet making or careers as fine furniture builders. The curriculum combined foundational woodworking techniques with technological advancements, enabling students to refine their personal styles and master their craft.
