Camosun College Student Gains Career-Ready Skills Through Hands-on Welding Program
Manveer Ryait began his working life in India, helping run his father’s metal manufacturing business right after high school. It was a hands-on education, where he picked up valuable skills through experience rather than formal training. Despite his growing expertise, he lacked the certification needed to build a professional career in the trades.
Just before relocating to Victoria with his wife, Manveer’s father passed away unexpectedly. The loss was not only emotional—it also placed a heavy financial responsibility on Manveer’s shoulders. As the new breadwinner, he had to juggle supporting his family and maintaining the business, leaving little room to invest in his own education.
Eventually, Manveer enrolled in the Welding Foundations program at Camosun College. There, he discovered student grants that eased the financial pressure and allowed him to focus fully on his studies. With fewer distractions and more support, he excelled academically.
His time at Camosun proved transformative. The instructors brought deep industry experience and a professional approach to teaching. The program’s emphasis on practical learning—nearly 90% hands-on—gave Manveer the confidence and real-world training he needed to turn his passion into a career.
