Langara College Celebrates Indigenous Nursing Graduate’s Inspiring Journey
snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College proudly celebrates its Indigenous students graduating this year, including Cecelia Simeon, who completed the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Reflecting on her journey, Cecelia shares insights that highlight the transformative experiences and strong support systems that have shaped her educational path.
Cecelia expresses gratitude for the various experiences that her nursing program provided. “I found that the clinical experience as well as my preceptorship offered me a variety of settings and opportunities to learn and grow before graduating and deciding where I wanted to begin my nursing career.” These opportunities gave her the confidence to move forward in her healthcare career with clarity and purpose.
Hailing from Gaw Tlagée (Old Massett) in Haida Gwaii and a proud member of the Haida Nation(external link) , Cecelia emphasizes the importance of support during her time at Langara. “Having the support of the Indigenous Gathering Space and Accessibility Services(external link) had the most impact on my belief and confidence that I could be successful in the program.”
The Gathering Space quickly became an anchor for Cecelia as she navigated the academic demands of the Nursing program.
The consistent support from the Gathering Space staff was vital as she moved through her nursing program. “From the first day I visited the campus to explore what prerequisite classes I needed to my last term, I was consistently reaching out to members of the Gathering Space team for both personal and educational support.”
Cecelia credits the Gathering Space staff for their unwavering guidance: “They showed up for me time and time again, and I certainly would not have been successful in completing the nursing program without their guidance and encouragement.”
For Cecelia, the support went beyond academics. It created a sense of belonging and motivation to keep going.
Reflecting on her journey, Cecelia encourages new students to reach out and take advantage of Langara’s support services: “I would strongly encourage future students to connect with the support that Langara College offers, like advisors, Accessibility Services, and Gathering Space staff.”
With a heartfelt message for Indigenous students, Cecelia emphasizes the importance of seeking help. “Start getting comfortable with asking for help and expressing your needs.” She asserts that recognizing one’s needs is crucial for success. “Don’t be afraid to visit your instructor's office hours and to chat with them about where you’re at and what it is that you need to be successful. Asking for help is a sign of strength and self-awareness.”
