Langara College ranked tenth globally for a sustainable campus, Buildings Category

Vancouver, BC – snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College is proud to announce that the College was ranked tenth globally in the Buildings category of the 2022 Sustainable Campus Index (SCI) by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

This year’s distinction marks the second year in a row the College has been recognized for its sustainable achievements and efforts. The 2022 Sustainable Campus Index was measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). Last year, ASSHE awarded the College a STARS Silver rating, exceeding the 2025 Strategic Plan goal to reach Bronze rating four years early. The College is now working on the roadmap to Gold rating, the second highest level of achievement.

“This year’s SCI top-performing ranking is a great accomplishment for Langara. The recognition in the Buildings Category directly demonstrates our commitment to climate action on campus,” says Dr. Paula Burns, President and CEO of Langara College. “Campus sustainability is also an important priority in our current strategic plan, and energy efficient buildings are key to our success in leading the way towards a more sustainable future.”

With more than 800 participants in 40 countries, AASHE’s STARS program is a globally recognized framework for publicly reporting comprehensive information about a college or university’s sustainability performance.

snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College has been mitigating climate action through sustainability initiatives such as energy management, in alignment with the Government of BC’s CleanBC initiative. Currently, the campus has four LEED Gold certified buildings, and despite increasing the campus area by 48% since 2007, the College has consistently reduced energy and GHG emissions annually. In 2020, our GHG emissions in tCo2e per GSM of campus area decreased by 48%. And with our new Central Heating Plant project, we expect to save an additional 15-25% of GHG emissions.

snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College is committed to leading sustainable initiatives to make positive changes and seeking opportunities to integrate sustainable practices into all aspects of the campus.
