Studio 58 presents Spring Awakening
Vancouver, BC - Studio 58, the nationally renowned professional theatre training program at Langara College, proudly presents the Western Canadian premiere of the landmark rock musical, Spring Awakening. This musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s controversial play explores teenage self-discovery and emerging sexuality against the backdrop of a repressive 19th century Germany. Winner of eight Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, four Olivier Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
“It's shocking how fresh the story and characters created by Frank Wedekind over a century ago still feel today. Employing alt-rock riffs and edgy lyrics, the musical gets under your skin. The youth of SPRING AWAKENING find themselves caught in the tumultuous experience of sexual awakening, self-definition and even self-destruction. The passion and transformation that is revealed day to day at Studio 58 is a wonderful starting place for the actors in this show. In theatre school, discoveries happen every day," says David Hudgins, Director.
Studio 58 Associate Director David Hudgins (The Park, Guys & Dolls) directs this wildly anticipated new musical with a first-rate team including musical director Andy Toth (Awkward Stage Productions), choreographer Shelley Stewart Hunt (Bye Bye Birdie, Guys & Dolls, Pal Joey), set designer Shizuka Kai (Play With Monsters, King Lear, Smile, The Musical), costume designer Marina Szijarto (The Park, Bye Bye Birdie, The Madwoman of Chaillot) and lighting designer Alan Brodie (Julius Caesar, Tear the Curtain, The Overcoat).
